Geheugen Out of sight, out of mind no longer applies to your baby. An occasional visitor becomes a recognisable sight, and a song played before may trigger memories in your child when it’s heard again. Your baby may not be able to tell you in words that they remember, but excited smiles and lit up expressions will say it all.

Hand-eye Coordination Hand-eye coordination is still improving and your baby will be exploring objects in far greater detail - often able to learn their functions. This object brushes hair, this object turns on the TV, etc. Your growing child will often follow your gaze to see what you are looking at.

Hearing, Language and Sound During these next few months your baby's babbling will start to develop into recognisable words. Your little one is learning to understand language and introducing the names of familiar objects and other familiar people will entice your baby to try to imitate you. Repetition is the key to reinforcement. By 9 months it's possible your infant can already say 'mama' or 'dada' and their attempts to say other familiar words might just be recognisable through the conversational babbling. Though do not worry if your child has not reached this milestone yet. Babies develop at their own pace and many do not pick up speech until much later. Even without speaking skills your baby will most likely understand and possibly respond to simple commands (i.e. "give Mummy the cup".) Introducing pleases and thank yous at this early stage will familarise your child with these terms and help to develop good manners and social skills in the future.

Social Developments Up until now, even if your child has been perfectly comfortable being separated from you or in the company of less familiar people, you may now find that stranger and separation anxiety can start to emerge. Your baby may become upset when you leave a room, or a stranger approaches - and this may intensify over the next few months. This is perfectly normal as your little one gains a deeper understanding, and therefore, fear of the world. But before long, as your child develops the language and social skills to cope with strange situations, this will dissipate. Your child will soon realise separation from you is never for too long!

Tanden krijgen Each child is different when it comes to teething. Usually appearing in pairs, the first teeth can emerge as early as 6 months (though some babies are actually born with one or two teeth already in place). More usually teething starts at around 9-12 months of age. During this time your little one may experience a lot of discomfort as the molars start to protrude through the gums - toys that offer a safe, chewable feature can be a welcome teething aid.

Touching and Mobility Your baby will start to use gestures for expression - like pointing to a wanted object, or waving goodbye. As your little one gets more curious, an intrepid explorer will emerge. Babies this age are very busy mastering the art of moving around. If your little one isn't yet crawling, they may have developed more unique ways of getting places, such as scooting on their bottoms, rolling or pulling themselves along on their bellies. The method of mobility is not as important as the fact that they are able to move their arms and legs and coordinate both sides of their body. It's especially important to provide supervision and to make sure to child proof your house to avoid accidents. From about 9 months your baby may be able to pull up into a standing position from sitting down. It won’t be long before they may even start to take those first tentative steps.
