New Born
0-3 Months

It may seem that your newborn doesn't do anything other than sleep, feed and cry, but excitingly some monumental milestones are about to occur.

Playtime Tips

  • Play more upbeat, child-friendly music around the house and sing during playtimes - your baby's reactions will change to different music and you'll soon learn what they really like. Singing will also help your baby become more vocal.
  • As a hanging mobile moves above your baby, encourage more interaction by pointing out the features and talking about the colours, characters, lights - watch to see what is appealing to your baby and focus more on that.
  • Introduce your baby to the different sounds and textures in the toys - jingle and rustle them - your baby will be able to follow the sound.
  • Change positions every now and again to give your baby a different perspective of hanging mobiles
  • Soothing music in your baby's crib will encourage calm. Gentle sounds, music and sights let them know that it is time to wind down. Combine music with gentle cooing sounds and a soft touch when it's time for your baby to drift off to sleep.

How your child perceives the world

Hearing Your newborn will know familiar voices well and will begin to respond to these voices by growing quieter or more excited. Speaking and singing to your baby at this stage is very important - these are the first tools for developing communication. Your newborn will also like the sound of music - soft lullabies will help to soothe and relax.

Seeing Your newborn baby is near-sighted and can focus best on objects 8-15 inches away, but is not yet able to see detail. Your newborn will start to distinguish colour and shapes at about 6 weeks old and will be able to visually follow objects - but usually not for long.

Touching / Movement Your newborn is able to respond to your touch and may be able to grasp your finger. Although far from ready to walk, when supported in a standing position your little one will naturally try to step out. Soft textures will appeal to all newborns as these imitate the feel of your skin and clothes as they snuggle close.
